Smallholding Life at Thorny Bush

Thorny Bush is not just a place to stay – it’s also our smallholding.
Growing food, tending the land and countryside life are all part of the everyday rhythm here.

Thorny Bush is a smallholding in Pembrokeshire, where growing food, tending the land and countryside life are part of the everyday rhythm here.

Growing food on our Smallholding in Pembrokeshire

Much of what we grow at Thorny Bush starts life in our polytunnels and growing beds. The tunnels help protect plants from the sometimes wild Pembrokeshire weather and allow us to grow a wider range of produce throughout the season.

Like most smallholdings, the space is always changing as we plant, tend and harvest different crops through the year.

Inside Our Polytunnels

Inside the tunnels is where much of the growing happens. Rows of plants quietly grow away while we keep on top of watering, pruning and general garden jobs.

Depending on the time of year you might see tomatoes climbing their supports, seedlings being started, or beds being prepared for the next crop.

What We Grow on the Smallholding

Throughout the year we grow a mixture of fruit, vegetables and herbs here on the smallholding. Many of these are used in the jams and chutneys we make here at Thorny Bush.

It’s always satisfying seeing the harvest come together after months of planting and tending the garden.

Our Chickens

Alongside growing produce in our polytunnels, Thorny Bush is also home to our chickens.

As a working smallholding, you may see (and hear!) them during your stay — they are safely enclosed but very much part of daily life here.

Fresh eggs are available from our onsite honesty shop, and the smallholding is always evolving as we continue to grow and expand.

*The chickens are kept in a secure, fenced area and do not roam freely around the accommodation

Wildlife Around Thorny Bush

Being surrounded by countryside means Thorny Bush is also home to plenty of wildlife. Birds nest in the hedgerows and trees, insects buzz around the garden, and the surrounding fields are full of life throughout the year.

It’s one of the things many guests say they enjoy most — the peaceful feeling of being properly in the countryside.
